Cultural Intelligence

November 2, 2009

Introduction

Cultural intelligence, or effectively interacting and working with people from other cultures, is the key to success in a globalized world, where many attributes such as communication, individualism, power, structure, and time are handled differently by various cultures. Some people may think that “culture stuff ” can be ignored, is intuitive, or simply can be improvised according to each person’ skills and personal talents. In fact, cultural intelligence is a soft skill that needs to be developed under a framework, that includes understanding and defining what culture is, learning about the main differences between various cultures, and being trained on managing intercultural differences, as researched and practiced by Intercultural Anthropologists, Researchers, and Consultants. The start point for the set up of each individual’s goal of being culturally competent on the personal and professional level is to identify his / her own personal cultural profile. For those who are planning partnership with the Germans, or already working with them, it is very important to recognize their intercultural differences. Even living in an Arab country on an expatriate basis without getting into the depth of the culture, may be not enough to get you into the details of distinct characteristics that make it different from every other culture. Some differences are quite evident, even to the unsophisticated (e.g. language, religion, political organization, etc.). However, others aren’t so evident, and the awareness of cultural differences and managing them is a complex process, and one may remain uncomfortable and off balance for quite some time. Cross-cultural differences in business practices also draw attention to areas where business people can face challenges when doing business abroad. When doing business in Egypt and the Middle East it is essential to learn about areas such as business culture, social formalities and etiquettes, and awareness of the do(s) and don’t(s). Although there are...
