Cross culture awareness

July 20, 2007

Overview:

It is very hard to know what life is really like in an Arab country whose culture one has never experienced directly. But it is very easy to have the illusion of knowing what it will be like from images furnished by popular communications media, from reading, or perhaps having met a few people from 'there', on your home ground. Even living in an Arab country on an expatriate basis without getting into the depth of the culture, may be not enough to get you into the details of distinct characteristics that make it different from every other culture. Some differences are quite evident, even to the unsophisticated (e.g. language, religion, political organization, etc.). However, others aren’t so evident, and the awareness of cultural differences and managing them is a complex process, and one may remain uncomfortable and off balance for quite some time. Cross-cultural differences in business practices also draw attention to areas where business people can face challenges when doing business abroad. When doing business in Egypt and the Middle East it is essential to learn about areas such as business culture, social formalities and etiquettes, and awareness of the do(s) and don’t(s). Although there are great diversities within the Arab region, a common religion, language and culture make the highlighting of general traits and features for the region valid.

In support for this purpose I'm arranging an Arab-Westerners Cross-Culture one-day seminar. The purpose of the seminar is to create better understanding of the Arab / Egyptian culture and reduce barriers to communication either on the personal or business level.
